| Isla Contadora is
located in the middle of the Gulf of Panama, a twenty-five minute by plane
from historic Panama City. This 300 hectare Island was discovered by Vasco
Nunéz Balboa in 1513 AD. At this time the islands surrounding
waters were rich with natural pearls which the Spanish Conquistadors took
advantage of for profit and claimed it to be property of Spain. Because
of Contadora’s natural protection from enemy invasion it became a center
of business where all the pearls were counted and registered. (Elisabeth
Talor now owns the largest of the Pearl Island pearls) Pirate stories,
Spanish artifacts and old jungle trails all mark this special place as
an important part in ‘New World’ history.
Today, the Island
is very quiet. Most inhabitants thrive on the small and pleasant
tourist trade. In contrast, to the Caribbean Islands, there is tropical
rain forest, many animals, more privacy and a safe environment.
The choices of white
sandy beaches are endless. Come and relax in the tropical crystal
clear water - everything is possible! Watch the whales and dolphins
breach out of the water, right from your beach chair! When you swim
just three meters into the water you will see coral reef and an array of
tropical fish at your feet. If you are a bird lover - hundreds of
birds hover the area daily.
Everyone on the Island
is very friendly, you will not pass by without a “Hello”. In October
2000 a new Hospital opened which will service the entire Pearl Island Group.
We have a Baker who makes wonderful sourdoe, a two
small supermarket,
a gas station and many restaurants to suit your needs. You can eat
out for as little as three dollars or tropical fine dine for twenty. Contadora
Island is a preferred stop off for international cruising yachts heading
to the Galapagos, South Pacific or through the famous Panama Canal.
This is a place where life long friendships begin.
